GREG’S BUSINESS GROWTH NEWSLETTER #204

– Being Human
– Random Stuff

Techniques for FIT
——-

  • Happy to remind you the past is set and the future changes with every step you take forward. With this in mind, check your plans to make sure they’re flexible enough to change.
  • Every time a new opportunity presents itself, instead of just considering short term activities and rewards, step back and ask yourself how you might change say, three years out. It opens up a new set of questions to ask.
  • Reflecting on your decade begins now. The year-end lists are showing up alongside decade-end lists. If you don’t like where you are, change it. I’m giving you permission.
  • Equating effort with results happens with your people more often than you think. Work backwards from results next week if you don’t believe me. Credit effort, but focus on results.

Being Human – Subtracting > adding?

“‘Hang the DJ, hang the DJ, hang the DJ,” – the Smiths (yes, any excuse to bring up the Smiths)

Remember Stretch Armstrong?

I’ll use his old promo picture to illustrate a point.

To help your people get to the outcomes your firm wants, instead of adding more incentives or pushing harder, consider removing obstacles holding your people back.

Think of Mr. Stretch Armstrong a stand in for your team. Here are two rambunctious lads stretching Mr. Armstrong:

If the goal is to move your people to the right, you can add more incentives and push/pull them to achieve outcomes:

The problem with this approach is it adds tension to Mr. Armstrong. There is a limit to how far Mr. Stretch can go. (as 9-year-old-me learned the hard way many moons ago. . .)

Instead, I want you to focus on removing constraints. It can have the same effect as adding force, but doesn’t come with the increased tension in Mr. Stretch Armstrong.

Finding constraints, as you might guess, is a simple concept to understand but not easy to execute. Next week, all I’m asking is that you think about it.

Mr. Stretch Armstrong (your team) will thank you.

“Every time you think television has hit its lowest ebb, a new program comes along to make you wonder where you thought the ebb was. ”  – Art Buchwald

Have you ever gotten the flu? I’m sure memory fails me but I only remember getting it once in my life. I can recall the instant it happened: I was out with important clients at a fancy dinner in Tacoma, Washington. I just finished the entré and, in an instant, my entire body said, “nope, something’s not right here.” That poor Sheraton hotel room was probably never the same.

I didn’t feel quite right this week. It wasn’t the flu, but I re-arranged my schedule to sleep it off in front of the TV. Did you know there is a show called, “Airplane Repo?” I should say “was” a TV show because it’s been mercifully cancelled. That said, let it be known there was an “Airplane Repo” marathon on last Tuesday afternoon.

Not all was wasted because I did have a small takeaway from the episodes I was fading in and out of: if you’re repossessing someone else’s property, have your paperwork on hand.

Good advice, for someone.
