  • On the hunch working from home for a long stretch is new to you, take note. Minus office distractions, you will get a lot done in a short period of time. Don’t fight it. When you’re done, move on to something non-work related. Guilt free.
  • Focus has its drawbacks. The main one being lack of movement. Wilson the dog makes sure I’m moving once every 20 minutes going in and out. . .and in. . .and out. If you don’t have a Wilson, my bride tells me an Apple Watch does the same thing, without the muddy paws.

“There’s something happening here
What it is ain’t exactly clear.” – Buffalo Springfield

After the last newsletter, one of you reached out and asked if I would share more from the conversations I’ve been having about COVID-19. At the risk of coming across like the Wing-Stop email I just got (wait, I went to WingStop? They have a COVID-19 policy?) I’ll share some information. The details of my meetings won’t be helpful, but you may benefit from a few high level takeaways across organizations.

I’ll split this into two sections: big ideas and specific topics they’re focusing on. I’d say there have been two big ideas and four topics. Read more

  • Eating well and getting a good night’s rest is a good idea most of the time, and right now it’s a great idea.
  • Everyone forced to use web-conferencing tools will do well to look into how to best use video. Have you seen the ratio “7-38-55?” It’s the rough impact of our words, our tone, and our body language in communication. Focus on the 7-38 because online the full 55 isn’t there, it just looks like it.

  • Early next week, check in with your biggest fan. With the news making everyone question future plans, it’s good to hear from someone who thinks you’re a genius and this crazy world is lucky to have you.
  • Set up your own trigger warnings. I just added another besides being invited to a “Scotch tasting.” Next time I hear a waitress repeat my order as a question, it’s a trigger I’ve ordered too much food, again.

  • As someone who has received feedback, a common thought is, “Well, it would have been nice to know that BEFORE now.” Share your expectations and double check for understanding at the start.
  • “Nailed it!” It’s a great feeling when preparation meets opportunity and your people rise to the occasion. Effective managers are happy for their people in the moment, less effective managers look for ways to take credit.

  • There’s some wiring in our brains which makes shortcuts irresistible. e.g. 10 minute abs. 4 hour workweeks. #1 draft choices. Psilocybin cure-alls. Greg’s bookshelf.
  • There is other wiring in our heads which turns everything into bimodal distributions. Black and white. Right and wrong. Us or them. All or nothing. Don’t believe me? Ask random people who grew up in the 80’s about Kate Bush.  Read more

  • When you have to garner a favor from a third party, where do you start? As Chaka Khan said, try getting them to “feel for you.” One tactic lifted from teenagers: anticipate the worst reaction and lead with it. “You’re going to hate me. . .”
  • No is a safe word but saying yes can be dangerous. Super negotiator Chris Voss suggests re-phrasing “yes” questions to “no” because it builds trust. Try it. “Do you have a few minutes?” becomes “Is now a bad time?” Ridiculous idea?

  • Forget what you think is valuable because it only matters what your prospect measures as valuable. There’s a report somewhere in their organization with a number which means a lot to them. Ask about it.
  • True, your prospects might say there’s more than one metric or key performance indicator to focus on, but press them to prioritize. Sometimes it helps to ask them for the company metric, their division metric, and their personal metric.

  • Each sniffle or muffled cough you hear from your people is a momentum robbing event in the making. If they have a bug, encourage your people to make plans for a few days off to rest because a planned absence can be worked around.
  • The ability to control one’s schedule has a strong correlation to job satisfaction. If your staff has inflexible time requirements, consider a concierge errand service as a benefit. Start with using it to reward a good month as a test.

  • Ever wonder where great managers are hiding? Most managers get there by decree, or job performance, not by demonstrating any particular management talent. Knowing this, you can’t overdo training managers in management.
  • Sitting in leadership, you’re immune to the politics of the people you manage. Political infighting flows down, not up, threatening to infect untold numbers of your firm. If you sense a management conflict, dig in now.
