Should I do this or that?
This week I had a head slapping experience that required an intervention from an advisor. I was stuck on a solution.
Decisions follow this general process that I liken to a funnel.

At the beginning, we have the notion that a problem is present. We research how others have solved this issue, settle on options, and then go about looking for the best deal. It's not always a purchase, but you get my point. The closer we are to the end of the decision process, the more we've settled on a solution.
That's what happened to me this week. I was so set on a solution, and the options around that solution, that I got stuck. I presented my options and my mentor did what I would have done. She asked, "What are you really trying to do here?"
When helping with decisions, questions that start with "What" move us up in the funnel. Questions that start with "How," move us down. I was so focused on how I thought I should get this done that I lost track of what I was trying to do in the first place.
I teach this stuff and it trips me up. I guess that makes me human.
I wonder if I could make a robot to remind me of that?
