Thoughts on Momentum

  • Start next year's momentum by scheduling January around just a few priorities. Get them done and move on. That feeling you have walking into February? Momentum building.
  • One way to build momentum into next year's plan is to mentally jump ahead to December 2023 and describe how the year ended up. Pick two accomplishments that excite you and work backwards. What has to be in place September 2023 for December to happen? What has to be in place in May for September to happen? Work back to the first week of January. Then start. Next week.
  • With your end in mind, your next steps outlined, and your enthusiasm growing consider what will slow your momentum. Your history is full of examples, list two and come up with ways to prevent it from happening.
  • Buy-in on vision isn't the sole reason your people build momentum, but it's the reason for some. Others like the value being provided to customers. Others buy into their co-workers enthusiasm. All the reasons start with clear vision.

Being Human - Top ten

"There is no joy in possession without sharing." — Erasmus

Year-end media is filled with 2022's top ten lists. They are fun to look at because they introduce us to things we missed during the year. Life is complex. A lot goes on inside our heads over 365 days. A lot goes on inside the heads of your loved ones over 365 days. Add in everyone else you know or come into contact with, and it's too much to keep track of.

Top ten lists help us understand what catches other's attention. All top ten lists pale in comparison to something we do each all year long. Referrals. When someone who knows us well introduces us to a person, product, or service it's a little insight into what they think of us. Sharing what you find with others gives the recipient a little insight into what you think of them.

Combing through my inbox's sent mail, the first five shares of 2022 start with a quote from the last Beatles documentary, an interview with the UpWork CEO, an interactive article on the Miami condo collapse, a voice technology article, and a job opening. The last five shares of the year are an Apple ad surveillance capitalism article, a lawyer referral, a book list, a client referral, and a lead generation software service.

Next week, take a minute and share a person, product, or service with people on your list. It's a fine way to start the year.

Greg-2022-Calendar-review

With so many top ten lists floating around I'm thinking about the top and bottom things from my 2022. My year that started with a case of everyone's favorite coronavirus and ends with a partially torn meniscus. Maybe there should be a top and bottom list?

Tops for me include a beautiful wedding, a graduation, seeing the kids romp through Europe/the USA, a kitchen remodel, a cross-country drive with my bride, and the wedding. (it was a good party)

The low list includes saying final goodbyes to people I love, learning about the passing of people I know well, and putting a pet down. The curse of mortality.

I usually do a quick look at the year's consumptions at this time too. Touring Amazon, the Amazon purchase is the Thermacell Radius Zone Mosquito Repellent. I think it works. The purchase I think about way too much is the Aerobin 400 Composter. Favorite remodel appliance is a nearly silent dishwasher.

I learned a lot about the joy of using the right tool for the job this year. (shout out to G-Money for always owning the right tools!)

I took a few classes and attended a grip of lectures this year. Learning about pasta, empire building, and winter gardening. Speaking of gardening, for those keeping score, my lemon tree is down from seven fruit to four. I'd like to blame the cat, but I know it's me. I'm working on it.

On to 2023!

I hope you have a Happy New Year's weekend!
