Quick notes to help you grow your business in less time with less effort. . . sometime next week.

Thoughts on Trueness

  • One way to practice emotional ease is to give equal weight to opposite points of view. If X is true, that should make 1/X true too.
  • Open up your brain to possibilities by asking yourself, "What would have to happen for [future result] to come true?" Don't discount any ideas to start, just bask in their potential.
  • Success stories create tension. We hear them and think, "I should be doing that," but it's a story. Next time you hear one, mentally insert, "The following is based on a true story." It takes the pressure off.
  • Establish where the person you're talking to is, and meet them there. You'll know you're in the right place when you make a comment and get a "Yes, that's true," response. A world apart from, "Yes, you're correct."

Being Human - Lead generation

"This is a masterclass."
"The lead scoring tool is genius."
"HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!" – words from LeedFlo participants

An idea showed up in a couple places this week. The idea originated with my friend Mark Levy, who released his Ted Talk, "Using the obvious to stand out in life and business." Basically, he says we have a hard time recognizing our uniqueness because we're too close to it. We live with it every day. You need an outsider to help you see where you stand out. (His Schlitz beer story is amazing.)

The idea became real to me a few weeks ago, but solidified this week. Another friend, Drew Laughlin, talked me into doing a lead generation workshop for marketing consultants that led to forming a little community, the LeedFlo Academy. Over the years, I've engaged in some mild complaining about my lead generation projects, but they're easy for me. Almost second nature. Always have been. Drew, the outsider, has been telling me for years that my approach is different. He convinced me to try to explain it in the workshop. Hence, the burgeoning little community of LeedFlo-ers.

It's working.

As a matter of fact, one of the LeedFlo-ers in the group used some of my language to uncover a new opportunity last week. This week we jumped on a call, talked to the client, and now he has a winner for a new client. Challenging work for him, and soon to be big rewards for the client.

I'm reflecting on these three events and thinking, duh, I should have been doing this a long time ago! Teaching is fun and, like writing, helps you distill your thinking. Watching others "do" the work shows me which ideas are working and which ones need more help. Being around others doing similar work is invigorating.

A gift for me

I know you've been struggling with what gift to give me for the holidays, and I have an idea for you. A gift you can give me that will keep on giving throughout the year.

Here's what you can do. If you know someone in marketing, if you are a marketer, or if your marketing team could benefit from some new lead generation ideas in 2025, send them the link to our group: https://www.skool.com/leedflo/about, or forward this email.

It's only $18/mo (or $180/yr), but most importantly, for the person who is interested, it has a 7-day free trial with no limits on what can be accessed. Anyone with even the slightest interest in B2B lead generation will get something just for signing up.

On December 30th we'll do a live workshop on lead generation for attorneys. So if they sign up next week, they'll get to participate in the next live workshop too!

LeedFlo. Catchy, right? (Drew did it)

Random Stuff

Don't believe everything you hear.

billy-elliott-movie

I'm watching Jeopardy, and one of the answers is, "What is "Billy Elliott?" It reminds me of a time when the kids were all back from school on vacation. I worked in the office the next day, so my evening ended early. As I prepped for bed, they were just settling into a new movie, which was a little annoying since I couldn't stay up, but it's just the way it was.

The movie was about a quarter of the way through when I tapped out. It was "Billy Elliott." If you haven’t seen the movie or the Broadway show, Billy's father is a coal miner in a coal mining town. He sends 11-year-old Billy to the gym to learn boxing, but Billy dislikes the sport. He happens to see a ballet class and joins it instead. Dad finds out, forbids Billy to take any more ballet classes, but he secretly continues, and it turns out he's very good at it. I think. I never saw the end.

All I remember from hearing about it when it was a hit on Broadway was that it was heartwarming, uplifting, and fun. The family were engrossed in the film and didn’t seem to hear me when I said goodnight and wandered upstairs. On the way up I murmured a “can’t believe he dies in the end” to myself, and went upstairs, chuckling at my little joke.

As usually happened when everyone was home on break, I was up and out the door before they got up in the morning. It wasn’t until dinner when I saw the family again, and when I asked about the movie, they were irritated. They were all like, “Billy didn’t die at the end!” And I was like, no, of course not. “Well then why did you say that?” they demanded, “we spent the whole movie thinking how terrible it will be when he dies. It ruined the movie!”

Huh. I guess they did hear me.
