“It's a semi-true story
Believe it or not
I made up a few things
And there's some I forgot." –Jimmy Buffett, "Semi-True Story"
The wait staff at the Mexican restaurant brings out a shot glass with a lemon on top and a candle. It's someone's birthday!
This brings up a quick conversation about tequila. Years ago (2013) I put up a blog post about the top tequila consuming countries, and it's consistently in the top 10 trafficked pages on my site. I should take it down, but it kind of cracks me up. Maybe I just need to update it.
When I think of tequila I am reminded of my first week at college. I made a new friend, and he asked me to join him on a trip back to his hometown. He grew up in a city of around 2,000 people and I said sure, let's go. It's not like I was from a big city, but Denver was over a million people back then, so when I arrived I was taken around as the big-city-kid.
My new friend's friends wanted to have some drinking fun, and they turned to me for inspiration. I tossed out "tequila poppers" which led to me and a group of kids on a dirt road in South Dakota drinking a lot of tequila and Sprite. This led to attending a high school football game.
My new friend was recently a big man on campus and still very popular with everyone. Mr. All American. It was fun to see. Though not everyone was happy to see him there. A couple of kids in letter jackets with furry little mustaches came around to give him a hard time. They weren't impressed by me either. He turned to me and said, "are you ready?" and I was like, for what? "to go," he said, "to throw down." He was looking at my confused, slack-jawed, tequila-stained face. "They want to kick our ass," he said pointing behind the bleachers.
The next part is a little blurry. I hadn't been in a fight since grade school, but my new friend was an all-state wrestler and, what we'd call country-tough. While I tried to keep from getting hit, he MMA'd these poor kids to the ground and pounded the snot out of them. This all happened behind the bleachers of the game with adults there, watching everything. So confusing.
Victorious, we spent the rest of the night driving from town to town, "cracking u-ees" as they called it. Going from one end of the town to the other, making U-turns and returning to the start, looking for fun. It was great.
I still see my new friend here and there. His smiling face also happens to be on a billboard at the airport. He's a respected man about town. He still looks like he could "go" though, so I wouldn't mess with him.
Or give him tequila poppers.
