Quick notes to help you grow your business in less time with less effort. . . sometime next week.

In this issue:

Thoughts on Web Calls

  • Researchers say it takes less than seven seconds for someone to determine if you "fit in their world." Shallow, yes, but real. On Zoom, what is your background "world"?
  • In sales calls, it's said a pre-conscious buyer's decision is made inside four minutes. That's why the old advice was "build rapport." If you do that, my advice is to move quickly.
  • Resting face is how you look while listening. Does your face reflect what's in your head? For most meetings it's not an issue, but for critical meetings, practice your resting face. (do it before the meeting though - if it's important, concentrate)
  • Look directly into the camera when talking. In person, you look into their eyes when talking. During the covid Zoom days my idea was a camera that sat inside the monitor, on the face, mimicking eye to eye. Someone did it! iContact

Being Human - Use what you think you're good at

“When an employee is optimized, working for their rational self-interest and consistently energized by applying their strengths, work doesn’t feel like work."
– from "The Human Being's Guide To Business Growth"

"Well, that may work for her, but I can't do it that way." If you've ever thought that, you're probably right. It's a human reaction to seeing something done in a way that doesn't use your strengths.

Know your talents and use them. Using tools like VIA Survey of Character Strengths and Gallup's Strengths Finder helps you "know yourself", as they say. Armed with this knowledge, you can look at almost any task/outcome and come up with your way of doing things. "How would. . .", and "What can. . ." questions put your brain to work. You'll come up with a way to use your strengths.

Then you may just hear someone else saying, "sure, that may work for you, but I can't do it that way," and you'll have a way to help them overcome the obstacle and keep the momentum going.

Random Stuff

“It's a semi-true story
Believe it or not
I made up a few things
And there's some I forgot." –Jimmy Buffett, "Semi-True Story"

The wait staff at the Mexican restaurant brings out a shot glass with a lemon on top and a candle. It's someone's birthday!

This brings up a quick conversation about tequila. Years ago (2013) I put up a blog post about the top tequila consuming countries, and it's consistently in the top 10 trafficked pages on my site. I should take it down, but it kind of cracks me up. Maybe I just need to update it.

When I think of tequila I am reminded of my first week at college. I made a new friend, and he asked me to join him on a trip back to his hometown. He grew up in a city of around 2,000 people and I said sure, let's go. It's not like I was from a big city, but Denver was over a million people back then, so when I arrived I was taken around as the big-city-kid.

My new friend's friends wanted to have some drinking fun, and they turned to me for inspiration. I tossed out "tequila poppers" which led to me and a group of kids on a dirt road in South Dakota drinking a lot of tequila and Sprite. This led to attending a high school football game.

My new friend was recently a big man on campus and still very popular with everyone. Mr. All American. It was fun to see. Though not everyone was happy to see him there. A couple of kids in letter jackets with furry little mustaches came around to give him a hard time. They weren't impressed by me either. He turned to me and said, "are you ready?" and I was like, for what? "to go," he said, "to throw down." He was looking at my confused, slack-jawed, tequila-stained face. "They want to kick our ass," he said pointing behind the bleachers.

The next part is a little blurry. I hadn't been in a fight since grade school, but my new friend was an all-state wrestler and, what we'd call country-tough. While I tried to keep from getting hit, he MMA'd these poor kids to the ground and pounded the snot out of them. This all happened behind the bleachers of the game with adults there, watching everything. So confusing.

Victorious, we spent the rest of the night driving from town to town, "cracking u-ees" as they called it. Going from one end of the town to the other, making U-turns and returning to the start, looking for fun. It was great.

I still see my new friend here and there. His smiling face also happens to be on a billboard at the airport. He's a respected man about town. He still looks like he could "go" though, so I wouldn't mess with him.

Or give him tequila poppers.
