Thoughts on Prioritization

  • I’m traveling in China. When they say “there’s a billion people in China that don’t care about your ____,” it’s true.
  • It’s rarely as bad as you think and conversely, rarely as good. Consider both sides.
  • When someone says, “It can’t get any worse,” speak up. It can always get worse.
  • Exercise your brain with some “what would have to take place for _______ to happen” scenarios. You’re a problem solving machine.

Being Human - China

“The most important lesson I learned...was that the winner of a gunplay usually was the one who took his time." – Wyatt Earp

I’ve been traveling China. Alternately seeing incredible historical sights and visiting businesses that allow tours.

This happens to be a break time for Chinese families and the tourist attractions are crowded enough to give a sense of what life is like with 1 billion more people than the US. I have been stopped multiple times to either practice English with a young person or have my photo taken because I’m one of the few westerners they’ve seen. It’s surreal.

Shanghai had 65 high rises over 20 stories tall in 1995. Today there are 6500. It’s like visiting Silicon Valley or New York City. It just feels like things are happening faster than you can imagine. "

The one thing that comes through loud and clear is this: we’re all human.

I’ve met mothers that want the best for their kids. Executives trying to figure out how to climb the corporate ladder. Guides that are living a life their parents could only dream of but comparing their lives to peers and feeling left behind. Thoughts and emotions that are instantly recognizable.

It’s a big world but we humans share the same wiring. That’s worth noting.

Random Stuff

Speaking chinese is tough. It’s a tonal language which means words that are spelled the same take on different meanings based on how they are intoned.

Our guide gave us an example of the word for mother being close to that for horse and we all laughed.

Then she gently informed me that the way I’ve been saying thank you isn’t quite right.

For an entire week I’ve been saying “laundry.”

“Welcome to our hotel.”

“Laundry.”
