Turn off device notifications. At the barber shop a ding goes off and we all grab our pockets like Pavlov's dogs. End that.
Before walking into a lunch, leave the phone in the car. The initial panic wears off by the time drinks are served.
I'm convinced there is no upper limit on the number of times you can say "thank you."
You control more than you think. Remember that.

Being Human - Perspective

It's not the end of the world.

Carl Sagan, the famous astrophysicist, had a show in the 1980's called Cosmos. In it, he described the "cosmic calendar" which put the history of the universe into a 12 month, 365 day, calendar year. On the very first day of the year is the Big Bang. On the last day of the year, December 31st, at 10:15am, the apes appear. Columbus sets sail at 1 second before midnight.

Perspective.

Don't take yourself too seriously. We just passed the winter solstice, the darkest day of the year in the northern hemisphere with 9 or so hours of daylight. Sydney will get over 14 hours today.

And this guy in Suzhou doesn't give a rip.

All is not well and there is plenty to be concerned about, just take the time to consider some of the good in the world at the same time.

Random Stuff

Prioritizing

Walking the dog can be a head clearing or head jumbling experience. Today it was head jumbling. It's like a floodgate opens and I nearly suffocate as the weight of a massive to-do list washes over me.

When I get back to the office, I unplug from notifications, put on the headphones, and do a 20 minute free-writing session to get the list out of my head. I take another 10 minutes to split the list into some broad categories. I apply my prioritizing exercise to evaluate each item, pushing some to the top of the list and others to the bottom. As I finish, not quite an hour after starting, a feeling of calm and control descends on me like a fine mist, leaving me smiling and basking in the glow of accomplishment.

I turn my phone back on and it beeps to life.

"Did you put my sister's package in the mail?" the text reads.

I look back to my spreadsheet. Mother cusser. Not on the list.
