Part of my output for the creative writing group. This comes from a workshop where we learned about screenplays. It's not formatted correctly on the blog, but you'll get the gist.
Screenplay: "OVERTIME"
FADE IN
INT. HOTEL BAR – NIGHT
CAMERA MOVES THROUGH THE CROWD TO A STANDING TABLE. THREE CO-WORKERS IN MATCHING COMPANY LOGO SHIRTS ARE FINISHING A ROUND OF DRINKS, WATCHING A GAME ON ONE OF MANY TVS.
THE BOSS
Shifts from one foot to another, distracted. Looks at watch. Speaks loud over the crowd noise.
BOSS
Think that's it for me guys. I'm tapping out.
SUSAN
(loud)
Are you serious? It's overtime!
BOSS
(talking fast, backing up)
I know, I know. I'm speaking at 9am. You two can tell me what happens. Don't worry about opening the booth. I'll be up all night so I got it. Just be there by 8:45 or so.
Susan turns to Dan with her hand up as the boss disappears into the crowd.
SUSAN
(a little too loud)
High five!
Dan returns a soft high five that lingers for a beat. Their eyes go from their hands to each other. Susan turns to the TV. Dan pull his hand back, adjusts his sleeve shrugging his shoulder and clears his throat. A waitress walks up, and talks over the crowd noise.
WAITRESS
(loud)
Need anything?
Dan turns toward the waitress and cups his ear.
WAITRESS
(louder)
You two good? Need anything?
Dan leans toward Susan and she leans toward him, still watching TV, pulling her hair over her ear.
DAN
(loud whisper)
Do you want anything?
Dan steps back for the answer, taking in the scent of her hair. Susan picks up her glass, moves the straw and drinks the glass dry, shaking the last piece of ice, crunching it. She thrusts the glass up and toward the waitress.
SUSAN
(a little too loud)
Final final!
DAN
(loud)
Yeah. Why not?
Dan turns back to the waitress who is collecting their empty glasses and twirls his finger.
DAN
(loud)
You heard! Two more!
Dan turns to Susan and watches her looking at the game. She is bathed in a soft red light. She turns to him in slow motion. A closeup of her face turns into a red rose bud slowly opening to full glory as background noise fades.
DAN VOICE OVER
(sensuous voice)
My soul radially whorls out to the edges of my body,
according to the same laws by which stars shine,
communicating with my body by emanation.
The camera fades from the fully expanded rose to Dan's face in the same soft red light, dreamily gazing at Susan with a slight smile.
SUSAN VOICE OVER
(low sultry voice)
What do you think happens next?
Dan takes a beat to register.
DAN VOICE OVER
I'm sorry?
The bar noise comes crashing back. We see Susan smiling and shrugging her shoulders as she looks into the camera, waiting for the answer.
SUSAN
(loud)
The game! What do you think happens next?
The camera pans back until we see both Susan leaning in to hear, and Dan struggling to come up with an answer.
